Jackfruit is a prickly exotic fruit that comes in India. This fruit grows on 30-meter-high trees and is a green-yellow colour. It is the world’s largest fruit and can weigh as much as 50 kilos!
Jackfruit, also called nangka, is increasingly used in Dutch cooking. The fruit is a good meat substitute because of its texture and juicy taste. It’s every vegan and vegetarian’s best friend!
Rootzz of Nature uses unripe jackfruit from Sri Lanka, where we work with local farmers. Even these jackfruits are enormous! Unripe jackfruits weigh 6 to 10 kilos and are 30 to 50 cm in size. Hard to imagine, isn’t it?
Our jackfruits grow on huge jackfruit trees in abandoned forest reserves, with no artificial irrigation, pesticides or herbicides. The meter-high trees are resistant to high temperatures and drought. They consume little water and the trees in Sri Lanka are protected by the government as a natural food source. Our jackfruits are truly environmentally friendly!
A ripe jackfruit is the largest fruit in the world and can weigh as much as 50 kilos! We use smaller, unripe jackfruit for our products. These weigh 6 to 10 kilos and are between 30 and 50 cm in size. Young jackfruit is very tasty thanks to its juicy texture. This texture also ensures that the fruit absorbs flavours well. Perfect for making the tastiest meat substitutes!
No! Jackfruit has almost no smell. The smelly fruit is called durian. Jackfruit looks quite similar, but it really is different! Smell isn’t the only difference between jackfruit and durian, there are also differences in the skin of the two fruits. The spines of the durian are coarser and sharper, while the jackfruit’s skin is smooth in comparison!
Young unripe jackfruit has a delicious fleshy texture that ensures that the fruit absorbs flavours well. This makes young jackfruit ideal as a meat substitute. You can eat ripe jackfruit just like any other fruit. They taste like pineapple and mango, yummy!
Jackfruit is packed with vitamins, minerals and fibre. The fruit is rich in vitamins A and B, potassium, calcium and iron. That is good for your immune system, blood and bones. It is also a fibre-rich fruit, which makes it easy for your body to digest.
Yes! The low numbers of calories, fat and carbohydrates make jackfruit a healthy summer fruit. The fruit is also naturally free from gluten, soya, cholesterol and saturated fats. A feast on your plate!
The Rootzz of Nature meat substitutes are unfortunately not 100% free from allergens. Some meat substitutes are fortified with additional nutrients such as protein so that they are as nutritious as real meat. For extra flavour, we use mustard with some meat substitutes. But we do keep our products as pure as possible! You can find the full list of ingredients per product on the product pages for consumers or foodservice professionals.
At Rootzz of Nature we think honesty and fairness are important. We always look for the perfect balance between pure and tasty. That’s why we use ingredients that are as natural as possible to make our meat substitutes so tasty.
